Autism Awareness Day - Saturday, April 21, 3-6 PM at Fireman's FieldUpdated Sunday May 20, 2018 by Azzedine Layachi.
April is Autism Awareness Month. The VSSC is organizing a special event to celebrate the special kids in our community. In that context, we will hold a festive event on Saturday, April 21, from 12 to 3 PM (Rain date, Sunday, April 22) with a host of activities, food, games, and goodies, at Fireman’s Field. Special guests from the motorcycle club Underworld Ryderz will join us to show support and help bring about awareness. The kids will have the opportunity to check out the bikes and take pictures with the group. Click here to see the event flyer.
You are cordially invited to join us in showing our support to our special kids and their TOPSoccer program. We need our community to come and show its awareness, support, and appreciation for our special kids. As part of fundraising to help kids with autism, our Club will be selling special soccer socks for the occasion. We encourage entire teams to buy them and wear them during practice and games. To purchase these socks, contact our Apparel coordinator Tracy Bascom at vssc.TBascom@gmail.com.
Our club has a TOPSoccer program dedicated to children with physical and mental disabilities that offers them the opportunity to have fun playing soccer just like other kids. (Watch this video and this one to learn about the program). Registration for disabled children and volunteers in our special soccer program is open all year around. It is always free for kids with special needs, and every young athlete in the program gets a free soccer ball, a practice T-Shirt and a full uniform for out-of-town tournaments. We have over 30 registered kids in the program, which is growing every day. Many people signed up as volunteers to help during practice every Saturday afternoon. Consider becoming a volunteer in the program.
TOPSoccer is open to boys and girls age 4 to 19 with disabilities. The program is held on Saturdays from 4:00 to 5: 15. Occasionally, players participate in out-of-town tournaments.
Volunteer helpers are always needed to serve as buddies to our young players. We are looking for volunteers, ages 11 and up, who are willing to team up with TOPS players, to help teach basic soccer skills and have some fun.
High school students may get service credit and a college scholarship is available for graduating seniors and college or trade school students who participate as volunteers for at least two seasons. The applicants must meet established criteria.
